What competitive golfers want

The first thing competitive golfers, including professional golfers, want from a shaft is whether the shaft moves the way they intend it to.

The emphasis is on whether the intended swing allows them to control the ball as intended (intentional shot).

Are the performance requirements for both increased casting distance and maneuverability the exact opposite?

Changes in shafts used by professional golfers

In the past, professional golfers tended to use heavy, stiff shafts that weighed in at 70g or 80g with an X-flex.

However, in recent years, there has been a shift to using lower spec shafts that are lighter and stiffer, known as calkata.

The reason behind this change is that the yardage (distance) of the courses on which players play is getting longer, and players are looking for maneuverability while also wanting to take advantage of the flexibility of the shaft to increase their distance.
